How much does a 911 dispatcher earn?


A dispatcher is that person that will take calls with simple messages and then will forward them further. There are different types of dispatchers like police dispatchers, medical service dispatchers, taxi dispatchers, fire department dispatchers and others.


Then there are the dispatchers that are dealing with 911 calls. They are also called operations. They are taking calls from all different users that need help from the police, firefighters or they need immediate medical services. The dispatchers according to the type of emergency they are informed about will make the necessary connection.


This job is a very stressful job and in order to get such a job there are different stages to pass. In order to get a dispatcher for the 911 emergency services, you need to have the ability of multi task. You need to have a great memory, be able to type fast and to react in stressful situation. Also you need to be able to go from one call to the other and still keep a detached position and react as objective as possible. For this job usually a school degree is developed and there is a training of three to six months required before becoming a dispatcher. All these are required because the life of those calling is in the hands of them. Also they need to sort the non-important calls from important ones. The dispatcher should inspire confidence to the caller and should be able to give important advices. He/she should be able to coordinate the dialogue and be able to calm the person calling to get the most useful information from them.


Since this can be a very difficult job, the wage should be a good one as well. The dispatcher should also feel that the job is paid enough for the efforts that are involved.


Statistics show that 10% of the 911 dispatchers are earning 10.67$ an hour and annually they are earning 22,200 $, 20% of them are earning 13.24$ an hour and 27,500$ a year. Half of the 911 dispatchers, the biggest part of them are earning around 16.73$ an hour and 34,800$ a year. 10% of these 911 dispatcher are luckier and they earn 20.99$ an hour and they get to 43.660 $ a year; but there is a 10% of them that are earning around 25.57$ an hour which is 53,190$ a year.


These data are approximate and the payment of dispatchers is made according to the locality and section that they are working for, but also according to the level of training an experience they have. There should not be a question of performance because all 911 dispatchers should be equally performing.


So the approximate salary for a dispatcher is around 33,000 $ an year, while as comparison the salary for a Police Patrol Officer is between $41,152 - $69,093 and year and that of a park ranger is of 31,000$.


Working as a 911 dispatcher can be rewarding both because the earnings are ok and because you get the change to save lives without being at the scene especially if you are the kind of persons that does not react well around blood or people suffering.
